Deckhand

Simple, reliable catch reporting for your fishery. Deckhand helps you track and organise your catch data to comply with regulatory standards.

To fish commercially in New Zealand, regulations set out by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) must be followed. Deckhand is an electronic logbook built to help you meet the MPI reporting requirements.

Deckhand, built by Real Time Data (RTD) in Australia, is used in fisheries globally. Dragonfly Data Science partners with RTD to support the app in New Zealand, ensuring the flow of high-quality data within the fishing industry.

Deckhand works offline, is updated frequently, and can be customised to meet the needs of your fishery. Dragonfly works with fishing industry partners so they can collect the information they need for managing their fisheries.

Why use Deckhand

Deckhand replaces the need for paper forms or logbooks to record catches. The app provides timely updates, including regulatory changes, to make sure you are always working with the latest information.

Deckhand operates on a yearly subscription to eliminate monthly admin—allowing you to pay it once, and get back to focusing on what you do best.

Deckhand runs on an iPad—plenty of screen room with big buttons that are easy to use on a moving boat. A mobile phone version is being tested by fishers in Alaska, and is scheduled for release in New Zealand in early 2027.

How does it work

Before leaving the port, enter your fishing trip data, and Deckhand will automatically present all the required fields you need to fill out while fishing.  Throughout your trip, enter your catch and effort data as you fish.

Deckhand uses WiFi, mobile data, and satellite connections, with the ability to switch between networks depending on the strength of the connection. This ensures that it is able to prioritise sending the necessary forms through to Fishserve as they are required.

Pricing

A single Deckhand subscription is $595 + GST per vessel per year, from July 1st, 2026. A subscription is required for each vessel, with any number of users able to login. Pricing excludes any data transmission costs and any hardware costs.

Requirements

Using Deckhand requires a few different pieces of equipment:

  • Fishserve Fisheries Management System (FMS) account: to collate the data from Deckhand and pass it on to Fishserve.
  • A cellular-enabled iPad with a weatherproof case: to run the Deckhand Pro App.
  • A VMS system from Pinpoint Earth: to collect GPS data at a level which satisfies the MPI reporting requirements.

If you are new to fishing, Fishserve will assist in the initial setup of your Fishserve Fisheries Management System (FMS) client number which is required for your Deckhand logbook.

Support on Thu—Fri: Vita

“I’ve enjoyed sinking my teeth into a new area of expertise and learning more about the fishing industry - something I knew very little about at first! Deckhand plays a huge role in fishery operations, and it’s very fulfilling to save fishermen time by helping them use the app as efficiently as possible.”

Do more with your data

Using the catch data you log in Deckhand, Dragonfly can build custom data collections for specific fisheries. This allows you to collect data specific to your industry, to help you manage your fishery as you see fit, rather than relying solely on regulatory data.

Gathering data on specific fisheries enables you to better understand the unique and variable environment your fishery is operating in within real time. From this, you can make changes in-season to better manage your fishery’s sustainability.

For example, Bluff Oyster Fishery operates in the Foveaux Straight, where the environmental cycle can lead to changes in oyster density and quality. To help protect the sustainability of their oyster bed, the fishery uses information collected by Deckhand to regularly monitor the health of their oysters and assess areas that are suitable for harvest.
