We’re thrilled to introduce Noah Morgan-Jones and Vita O’Brien as the faces behind Dragonfly Data Science’s customer support team for Deckhand.
Dragonfly has expanded its offering to include Deckhand, an app that helps fisheries record and track their catches. To help care for every Deckhand user, we’d like to welcome Noah and Vita to the Dragonfly team as customer support assistants.
Fishers need technology to work efficiently and consistently while they’re out at sea. However, if any problems arise, Noah or Vita are available to help troubleshoot issues involving Deckhand technologies.
Both of them work part-time, with Noah working Monday to Wednesday, while Vita takes over every Thursday and Friday.
Meet Noah
Born and bred in Wellington, Noah started working with Dragonfly ten months ago and has quickly become well-versed in all things Deckhand.
With his background in hospitality, Noah brings a friendly and calming presence to the Dragonfly team, helping customers talk through their problems and find solutions.
“Working in hospitality teaches you quickly to stay calm in heated situations, and it prepares you for the unexpected,” says Noah. “Everyone’s got a story about technology refusing to play ball, but knowing I can help ease a frustrating situation for fishers and help get them back up and running in no time, maybe even getting them to crack a smile while doing it, is super rewarding.”
“I’m always up for a yarn. That’s what I really enjoy working at a job like this. It’s good fun getting to know the fishers and chatting with them to see how their work is going.”
For Noah, fishing has been part of his life since day one.
“I'm the eldest grandson, and when I was born, my Grandad was so excited, he rushed out and bought a fishing rod for me,” laughs Noah. “I used to go out on trips with him until he sold his boat, so I've been around fishing for a while.”
Noah still enjoys an occasional fishing trip, but has since developed a keen interest in sports. It doesn’t matter whether it’s football (his favourite), rugby league, or basketball, he’s a sports guy through and through.
Meet Vita
Vita was raised in Wellington and has been working at Dragonfly for just under a year.
After growing up in a book-obsessed household, Vita found herself studying for a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English Literature at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
Vita then went on to work in the operations and processing team for OSPRI, which manages the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) programme that tracks cattle and deer throughout their life cycle. With a background in animal tracing programmes, Vita is armed with the knowledge and patience needed to understand the day-to-day needs of fishers.
“I’ve enjoyed sinking my teeth into a new area of expertise and learning more about the fishing industry - something I knew very little about at first! Deckhand plays a huge role in fishery operations, and it’s very fulfilling to save fishers time by helping them use the app as efficiently as possible.”
Alongside working at Dragonfly, Vita has returned to university to study for a postgraduate certificate in Information Studies, following in the footsteps of her Grandma, who was a Librarian.
“Growing up, I always loved reading and took any opportunity I could to delve into new information. At Dragonfly, I’ve not only been able to do that, but use my knowledge to help others, which really fills up my cup.”
