Design and development of a reporting system for the Coromandel scallop fishery

Dragonfly Science set up a reporting system for the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council. We provided:
- a simple and robust web-based data collection and entry process
- client-focused outputs, including graphical analysis
- a secure database for long term information storage
Reducing seabird fatalities in trawl fisheries

We designed an experiment to find the best mitigation device for albatross. Our work included:
- preparing an experimental protocol in consultation with other parties
- grooming data to remove spurious results
- carrying out data analysis using the R software package

A risk index was calculated for 64 species of New Zealand seabirds, to enable population management decisions to be made. The project involved:
- pragmatic use of limited available information
- statistical analysis
- preparing graphical information and reports for decision-makers
