We are a specialist data analysis company. Each of us has a PhD in a scientific discipline and significant experience in our own field. Together we have a broad range of skills to draw on and enjoy devising innovative solutions for your data analysis problems.

We like the challenge of 'big data' and are not afraid to tackle complex issues. Our expertise in software development gives us the flexibility to tailor our service to the particular needs of each client. Early involvement and working with you across the whole project often enables us to provide useful feedback on data collection methods. It also helps us as we gain a full understanding of the project and how best to use the raw data.

Dragonfly Science was established in 2006 and now has three full-time and two part-time science staff. We work in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand's capital and embody the values of the city to be unique, approachable and world-class.

We work to global best practice standards and are committed to the scientific ethics of independence and integrity. We support principles of openness in sharing results, engaging with peer review and collaboration. Our aim is to provide the information necessary for robust public debate and effective management.

Current work

Much of our current work is in statistical analysis, including projects estimating and reducing the bycatch of protected species in fisheries, risk assessments and ecological modelling. We also have ongoing research projects in software development and the analysis of data generated by high speed/volume data processing. We would be interested in hearing from potential collaborators in this area.

Outputs

Outputs and results can be supplied in a range of forms, depending on the project, and are tailored to the client. We commonly prepare written reports and give presentations, but also deliver databases and design and build software tools for specific purposes. Web-based tools are also a speciality.

Tools

We have collective experience in R, JAGS, Django, Python, PostgreSQL and Latex. We have also developed methods to process the large and complex data sets we use, and improve their robustness and performance.

A secure environment for your data is ensured, with regular backups to an offsite server. In addition, our workstations and laptops are encrypted, so even if lost, no data would be compromised. We also use modern software development practices such as version control and test suites to produce reliable code.
